Noi ci ritorneremmo!

The beautiful and peaceful house is situated 1 km away from Afrata village, on top of a hill with a huge garden, and most of all it has a wonderful balcony overlooking the sea, a breathtaking view.
The owner, Manos, has shown very warm and welcoming as well as a very discrete and friendly support throughout our stay.
We would recommend it to anybody and we would definetely like to go back!
In short - we loved our stay here. We loved the house, the village and the beach and this house fell very nicely in the niche we wanted of staying in a charming, quiet place with all necessary amenities, close to a beach. It was a great place from which to explore the Cretan West and Southwest. Come, you will not regret it.
In long form: I will first describe the house without much judgement and then go on to rave about it.
The advertised property is a 2-storey detached residential house with two bedrooms (one twin, one double) and bathroom upstairs and an open plan combined living room/kitchen downstairs. There is an outside sitting area at just above ground level with seating available to sit outside under shade. There are AC units in the bedrooms and living room, and high-speed wireless internet. The styling to my eye appeared traditional Cretan. The house was clean and in excellent repair on arrival.
We loved the traditional appearance of the house; it felt private and really comfortable. The host, Manos, is a very nice man and made a point of coming round to introduce himself and took us out for a drink or two but at no point did this feel like an imposition. At one point, we managed to lock ourselves out but got back into the house within twenty minutes or so - the owner lives in the village. As a further bonus, they make their own olive oil and other goodies which awaited us on arrival! There is just one thing to be aware of, quite a few nearby families appear to keep chicken, some of which rather noisily announce the sunrise (or sunset, or absence of sun), happily in the night on occasions. We found it easy enough to block them out by closing the shutters and windows but if you sleep very lightly, you may need earplugs.
The village of Afrata is quite small and though it feels remote, only a short drive from the nearest big settlement of Kolymvari (and by extension, the main west-to-east road, the EO90). Local amenities in Afrata include two friendly taverns with good, hearty food and drink. There is a convenience store which sells most necessities and is owned by a very friendly lady. Storeowners generally spoke very good English. The gorgeous but small beach of Afrata is a short distance away, though be aware that that there are about 100 metres of elevation to climb on the way back to the house. The pebble beach itself is lovely, with clear blue water. There are free sun loungers and umbrellas and a relatively inexpensive beach cafe.
This is an awesome two story villa located in the quiet, elevated village of Afrata. We enjoyed a constant, comfortable breeze and were surrounded by olive groves and views. The property is well maintained and quite lovely. The villa’s two bedrooms and living area had AC units. The kitchen is well equipped with a full size refrigerator which allowed us to make our own breakfast that included fresh eggs provided by our host, Stelios, and one of the village's restaurant owners. There was a porch where we dined often and it had a drying rack for beach towels. We are a large family of seven, so an additional child’s bed was provided for our youngest son and oldest boy took the couch that was placed out of the way. Another extra portable bed was placed in the largest bedroom which was perfect for our three girls. My wife and I took the smaller bedroom where two beds were simply pushed together. The point is, we stated a need and it was quickly and adequately provided for at no extra charges. While the place had only one bathroom with a shower, it was not much of a problem as we were going to beaches every day where you shower off before returning to the car. The WiFi was good, but I have to admit, we did not try to stream any movies over it. For Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook, the WiFi was very responsive The villa is nestled between two restaurants where we enjoyed wonderful food and a great dining experience. Both restaurants had terrific shaded balconies where we dined. We typically like to eat at different restaurants every night while on vacations, but made exceptions because the food was great and the host/owner/cook made great food and made it a special dining experience for our family (friendly). You can walk a km down a road to a secluded beach that has free sun beds and a bar. However, the beach is rocky which makes it a little difficult to get into the crystal clear blue water, but it is sheltered (not wavy) making it ideal for snorkeling. It is a very nice beach. Getting there; we were a little concerned flying into Chania and driving out to this small town without having a precise address. But Manos, the property manager, gave good instructions and we were easily identified when we pulled into the small town square. He immediately met us and together we enjoyed some refreshments and conversation. Parking was not an issue with our nine-passenger van. Afrata is a warm and welcoming village. Thank you, Stelios and Manos for your hospitality.
